A New Cover? Why Yes! | Rebecca Ethington

My whole life changed for the interesting when my lovely 93 year old grandfather offhandedly told me how much my grandmother liked my stories. He’s lonely and lives several states away so I figure – I’ll write him a story. Yeah – that will cheer him up. Seventeen days later ‘Kiss of Fire’ is in its first draft form.

Yep, I am really not lying when I say that I wrote a book for my Papa’s birthday.

So I have this book, a birthday present mind you, and it needs a cover. I’m thinking: birthday gift for a cute old man, a few people like it sure… but whatev’s. So I pull favors… photographer friend from high school (who I love, I mean seriously check out his stuff!) make my sister do make-up and force my sister-in-law to humiliate herself. I get the pictures from Rick, and edit them myself with my mediocre Photoshop skills still hanging on from my web designer days.

It’s not great, but it will do.

It’s just a silly little book, no one but friends will buy it.

I was wrong.

Very.

Very.

Wrong.

In fact, it appears people love it. It appears I can actually write. You have no idea how much that knowledge shocked me.

You have no idea how much each of you who has picked it up, loved it, and passed it on, mean to me.I never expected it to go this far – but it has and I couldn’t have asked for more.

But one theme is consistent among reviewers – the cover sucks.

Let me be the first to say – we are working on it. Actually its been in progress for a while, so even those early plea’s for a new cover have not gone unheard! Our photo shoot is this Saturday. Yep, you heard right – this Saturday. See, I’m not a stock photo kind of gal and seeing as I messed up so big last time, this time I am not going to make any mistakes.

I have been working closely with Rick to power plan the covers for all the books and on Saturday we are taking the pictures for all of them. Which means I have had to cast the characters with models. So this Saturday I will have Jos, Ry, Ilyan, Wyn, Ovailia and Cail all in one room. A little freaked out – you bet I am.

But don’t worry I am not going to make the same mistake as last time. I am not designing the cover. Once all the pictures are taken and basic editing has taken place all the lovely pictures move onto an actual cover designer. And, I am so excited to announce that I will be working with Sarah over at Okay creations. Her covers are gorgeous and I can’t wait to see what magic she pulls out for me.

And all this, is happening fast. Photo shoot on Saturday and right into cover design.

Kiss of Fire will have a new cover by the end of January.

Happy Dance!!

So never fear you lovely people – A new cover is coming and when it does – I think I might giveaway a poster or something from the photo shoot… hmmm, yes that sounds fun!
