It’s Friday! – Flashback! - Rebecca Ethington

Have you ever felt like you needed back up singers? You know, really talented people to just follow you around and sing specific songs when different things happen?

No?

Is that really just me?

When I was little I used to imagine I had back-up singers all the time. When other kids were playing hopscotch I was forcing neighbor children to re-enact some of the stories in my head. Yep, I was that neighbor kid. And I would get really mad if they would deviate from the plot. Which is probably why not many of them wanted to play with me. It’s all starting to make sense now. Cue the sad background music.

Ah, yes, my lonely childhood days in which I forced my second grade class to pretend to be mummies that were eaten by tarantulas. Or my third grade place to reenact some crazy Peter Pan spin off I was obsessed with at the time (I used to act out the movie trailer for that one in front of my grandfathers mirror), or my fifth grade friends to….

Wow. Maybe I am starting to regret these flash back Friday things

Wait.

It’s the background music..

I forced my fifth grade friends to reenact epic battles from my favorite books of the time! They would battle monsters, mummies and dragons all in the name of ‘Choose Your Own Adventure!’

A yes, those were days of loss, of love, and of adventure!! No other fifth grader dared crossed our paths! It was us between the monsters (aka the ‘cool’ kids) and no one could defeat us!

We were awesome!!

And it was all because of the background singers that would follow me around and sing songs for me, or rather inside my head. And it was the late 80’s ear;y 90’s so the music was awesome.

Wow. That was painful.

I promise, no more bad/weird music in Friday Flashbacks next week… Next week I will tell you about my obsession with ‘Sideways Stories from Wayside School’
