The strong hand was cold as ice and course like sandpaper. I tried to scream at the contact but no sound came out, only the strangled cry as Ryland’s hand closed around my neck, cutting off my air supply, and smashing me into the wall.
The force of the impact swelled in my head, a sharp pain banging against my skull as I clawed at the hand in vain. I tried to scream at the sight of him, my legs flailing as I kicked wildly in an attempt to get away, but he only increased his hold, his voice a low growl of anger and hatred in my ears.
“Ilyan thinks he can keep you from me, well he’s wrong. You are mine, and everything about you belongs to me.” Ryland’s voice was caught between a yell and a sob, his hand shaking as he held me against the wall, his voice as icy as his eyes, the change from even a few moments ago startling.
“You are mine! Mine…mine…mine!” he moaned again, his voice growing louder with each word as his insanity increased.
I looked into his eyes in desperation, the blue lightening as I watched him, as his lips mumbled the same word over and over. Little stars of white popped in my vision as my body screamed in need for the oxygen I could no longer give it. Suddenly his hand released me from the wall, his arms gathering me into him in as he held me against his chest.
“Mine, mine, mine,” he continued to repeat, his tone changing and softening, his voice breaking in tears. My body froze in fear as he held me, his chest rumbling as he continued to repeat himself.
Deep inside I knew I should feel sympathy, that I should accept him as not being a threat. But I couldn’t, I felt the pain of his cold magic against my skin, felt his tight muscles against the ache in my neck where he had tried to kill me only moments before and all I saw was the red that dripped down the walls that surrounded us, all I heard was the clanging of pipes, all I felt was fear.
My magic rushed forward at the chill of his magic against my skin, the reminder of the power mixing with my fear and I shot it out of my hands, right into his abdomen. The dark hallways filled with the sounds of his scream as it hit him, his body flying away from me. I jumped at the loud snap that cut through the dark, the sound of Ryland’s body hitting against a wide wooden door, echoing off the stone.
I gasped for breath as I watched him, my breathing coming in tight puffs of fear as he pulled himself to standing, his chest heaving as he faced me. Ice moved over me as I watched him, as my fear lessoned, and anger squared my shoulders, anger I had never felt before looked back at Ryland.
“I d-do n…not bel-long t-to y…you!” I yelled, my voice shaking as I fought the terrors that gripped me.
“You are bonded to me!” He yelled, his voice deep as he walked toward me, his icy eyes boring into me and I twitched, the look exactly what I remembered from before. The look that had haunted my tortured nightmares had moved into my twisted reality.
“Not anymore,” I spat knowing that if Wyn and Ilyan didn’t get here to stop me in time I would kill him.
I wanted to.
